Turner thoughts.

How the heck did that happen? I can't believe the cupboard at KU could have dried up that quickly, nor do I believe the Gill lost his coaching ability to put points on the board?? I'm dumbfounded.

That certainly wasn't the way I expected his debut to go. It'll be quite the burden to carry for a while, but there's only one way from that point. Onward and upward. (But if I'm correct they host Georgia Tech this weekend, so the upward thing may have to wait one more week.)
On the good side, Ole Miss also flopped to a 1AA team, so that deflected a bit of the national spotlight away from KU.

Anyone else notice the subtle yet visible changes in this years Nebraska jerseys?

Personally I think they are NICE. Kind of a retro look.

For those who didn't notice, if you look close, the stripes on the sleeves are more arched, rather than straight, to match the shape of the shoulder pads. Also the numbers on the sleeves are actually smaller and on top of the shoulder pad rather than the large numbers on down farther on the sleeve.

You can see the new ones here:

Post Game Thread

After watching the game on tv, here are some of my thoughts.

Overall I thought it was a solid win. Not a spectacular 1990's performance, but we did dominate the game from start to finish without a doubt. If nothing else, the biggest question mark of the offseason (QB) was answered.

Speaking of which, T-Mart was AWESOME, in the literal sense of the word. I know my jaw dropped a couple of times. I kept thinking I was seeing Eric Crouch running the ball. But he also impressed me with his throwing, putting the ball right where it needed to be with crisp passes. I only remember 2 off throws. And his ball faking out of the QB read has got to be where he got the nicname T-Magic. But what I was most impressed with was how comfortable he looked in the pocket. No happy feet, looked decisive, and seemed to be able to check down to at least the 2nd option. And this from a freshman making his first appearance.

The defense was a little worrisome, but they were also very dominant at times. They gave up quite a few yards, but not many points. What makes me feel good though, is that i remember having the same feeling last year. If you'll remember, we didn't have the top rated overall defense last year, just the top scoring defense. Last year we would give up yards, but then make a play when we had to. And we did that tonight too with the last second strip by Gomes. The difference may be that this year we don't have Suh, who seemed to usually be the one to step up and make that big play. I even said right before WKU's touchdown that this is where Suh would usually step up and make a play. We'll never replace Suh, but I think with some more experience and confidence, a few playmakers on defense will emerge.

Like possible David at LB. He looked really good, and always seemed to stick his head in the right hole. He seems very instictive like the coaches have said. I saw him stand up a few blockers and then shed them to make the tackle. But I doubt at 210 pounds he will be able to do that against the elite competition.

O-line looked good, but that's hard to say against weaker competion. But as someone else pointed out, I don't remember andy falls starts.

Niles Paul had some great plays, but still can't secure the ball and should probably be counted on for a turnover a game.

Mcneil had a couple of drops. That was very disapointing for me. I am hoping for him to be our possession reciever we've been missing since Swift.

That's about all I've got for now. On a side note, I was very pleased with the broadcasting of Baldinger. He provided some great analysis, and did it just a few seconds after the plays. Much more than I was expecting from a ppv team.

This sums up Obamanomics

Quote:

Which neatly segues into a discussion about the reckless tenure of technocrat
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articl ... 07007.html

Christina Romer, former chairwoman of President Barack Obama's Council of Economic Advisers and one of the chief architects of the stimulus plan.
Romer predicted -- in graph form, so even I could understand -- that an "unprecedented and pragmatic" $800 billion stimulus would keep the unemployment rate less than 8 percent (rather than push it to 9.5 percent).

Yet as Romer wisely retreats back to academia, we hear something new. Dana Milbank of The Washington Post reported this week that Romer peppered her goodbye remarks with rational thoughts, such as "economists don't fully understand why" and "almost all analysts were surprised" and "failed to anticipate."

The realization that you can't predict the future -- and mold it -- could only come as a shock to an academic.
Romer's recent remarks rationalizing the stimulus failure and advocating more spending offered us another clue into her thinking. "Concern about the deficit," she explained, "cannot be an excuse for leaving unemployed workers to suffer." (Indignant italicizing mine.)

That doesn't sound especially scientific to me.

How does suffering fit into an economist's calculations? Surely some economists believe that extending unemployment benefits is a disincentive -- and thus creates more suffering? Larry Summers, current Obama economic adviser, famously wrote that the unemployment extension could be "an incentive, and the means, not to work."

So what choices are we left with? 1) Romer was completely wrong. 2) Romer was driven by ideology. 3) Economists generally have no clue. 4) Romer felt pressure to come up with numbers that comported with the outlook of her boss. 5) All of the above.

Which number do you think?

Heineman running for Senate

It's been pretty clear to those of us who pay close attention to local Nebraska politics that Dave Heineman is not really running for Governor. Rather, he's running for Senate. He's pretty much gone on the assumption that because he has that "R" by his name, he doesn't have to do anything to get back into the Gov's mansion. But Joe Jordan got the video that makes it clear where his focus is:

http://nebraska.watchdog.org/8357/exclu ... dium=email

Quote:

On Tuesday, Heineman said a Senate bid in two years is still very unlikely but when Nebraska Watchdog started to ask Heineman if he’d “sign a pledge” Heineman didn’t wait for the question to be finished. He jumped in with a clear cut “No.” Asked why he won’t sign a pledge Heineman said, ‘”Because the people of Nebraska, my bosses, are asking me to take a look.”

And here's an irony for ya.....he says people are upset about the "Cornhusker Kickback". HOWEVER, his hypocrisy is exposed. First off, the idea was discussed after Heineman made it clear he was upset about unfunded mandates for the states if HCR passed. It was too late to put in for all states at the point the bill was at, so Nebraska was given an exception, and Harry Reid made it clear the goal - working with Nelson - was to open that up to all states when it came time for the Conference Committee.

And that's exactly what happened.

Now Dave thinks HCR is horrid. In fact he recently, in a letter, threatened the Nebraska State Education Association, the Nebraska Association of School Boards and the Nebraska Council of School Administrators. He stated they have to join in fighting against the enactment of HCR laws, stating to them: "If you sit silently by, I am going to assume that your lack of action is tacit support for increased Medicaid funding and the likely reduction in funding for education." In other word, it's education OR health care. (The Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World Herald editors have condemned this behavior).

But guess what....he's also going after that money that will cover all the extra expenses - the very money Nelson made sure Nebraska and every other state would be able to get. Thats even though he's joined in fighting the legislation and calling it "unconstitutional".

ANYWAY.....Vote for Dave and you have a guy focused on getting to Washington, not on governing and leading the state. Nebraska is facing the largest budget deficit ever - $750 Million - that's TWICE what it was last year when he called a special session. He refuses to do so before Election Day. And he's made it clear he wants more tax cuts - that's his only answer to this extremely serious problem. That, and saying education will be cut if education groups don't support his views.

Maybe a little panic warranted? Another Injury.

http://my.journalstar.com/post/Husker_Extra_Group/Husker_Extra/blog/compton_out_indefinitely.html

Quote:

Nebraska is now even thinner at the linebacker spot.

Husker head coach Bo Pelini issued a statement after Thursday's practice saying sophomore linebacker Will Compton suffered a foot injury during the workout. He is sidelined indefinitely.

“Will was injured during practice today. After practice we were able to confirm that he will be out for some time,” Pelini said. “We have informed his family about the injury, and we will know more about Will’s status going forward in the next few days.”

Yikes. I think this is the worst position to be thin at since more Big-12 teams are trying to run the ball. The D-line will need to step and and make sure to stuff the run like they did last year or it could be a vulnerability.

Quarterback Frustration

It sure feels like a circus not knowing who the starting quarterback is. I sure hope that Bo isn't keeping his team in the dark and as frustrated as he is keeping the fans.

ESPN Reporting That the Big 10 Divisions are set

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=5519832

Multiple sources told ESPN.com that the two divisions in the Big Ten will look like:

• Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern and Minnesota.

• Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana and Illinois.

I want it noted that I called it about two months ago that OSU and Michigan would end up in different divisions and was laughed at. I told you guys.
